Nonprofit Community Music School in Austin
New School of Music is a nonprofit community music school in Austin, Texas. Its mission is to serve the community by sharing the gift of music, connecting world-class professional musicians with students of all ages, and helping provide music instruction to underserved youth through a non-competitive, challenging, and welcoming environment.
Students can study many styles of music on the instrument of their choice — including piano, guitar, violin, voice, drums, mandolin, trombone, flute, saxophone, trumpet, and more. New School of Music has provided more than 10,000 music lessons to over 120 underserved youth, with a scholarship goal of 50% of total enrollment. Scholarship candidates are selected based on economic need, desire to learn, and commitment.
The school teaches at co-location partner sites to keep overhead low and serve more students. Primary teaching locations include St. Martin's Lutheran Church at 606 W. 15th Street and Cedars International Academy in northeast Austin. The annual Texas Jazz & Blues Camp is held each June at St. Stephen's Episcopal School.
